Pinstripe Bowl coming to Yankee Stadium

Wow…what an incredibly ugly name for a bowl game!

NEW YORK — The first Pinstripe Bowl will be played at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30 and will be televised by ESPN.

The game will include the No. 3 team in the Big East and the No. 6 school in the Big 12, excluding Bowl Championship Series participants.

ESPN agreed to a six-year contract, the Yankees said Tuesday, and New Era Cap Co. Inc. agreed to a four-year deal to be the title sponsor. Future games will be played no earlier than Christmas and no later than New Year's Day.

This will be the first bowl game at Yankee Stadium since Nebraska defeated Miami 36-34 at old Yankee Stadium on Dec. 15, 1962.

The first football game at the new $1.5 billion stadium will be Nov. 20, when Notre Dame plays Army.

In July 2009, the Yankees announced that Yankee Stadium will host a Notre Dame-Army game on Nov. 20 as well as a series of Army home football games vs. Rutgers in 2011, Air Force in 2012 and Boston College in 2014.

Football Championship Subdivision title game will be in Frisco

The NCAA chose Frisco, Texas over Chattanooga, Tenn. to host college football’s title game for the FCS, or the second tier of college football in the U.S. Here’s the announcement from the NCAA:

INDIANAPOLIS – Frisco, Texas, has been selected as the new host site for the NCAA Division I Football Championship game. Frisco emerged from a pool of several cities that submitted bids to serve as the host site for the championship game for the next three years, beginning with the 2010 season. Hosted by the Southland Conference, the championship game will be played at Pizza Hut Park on Jan. 7, 2011.

“We are excited about the opportunity for the football championship game to be played in Frisco,” said Damani Leech, NCAA director of baseball and football. “With the quality of bids that were submitted, it was not an easy decision to make. But we feel the right decision and right place to serve as the site for the Division I football championship is indeed Frisco.”

“This is a great day for the city of Frisco, Texas,” said Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference. “The strong community, football fan base, and dedication to putting on an event that will excite the participants in the championship game is something we are confident we can do. We are thrilled the NCAA feels the same by awarding us with this championship.”

The championship game will be the culmination of a newly expanded 20-team championship bracket. As a result of this expansion, the game will be played a few weeks later than in years past. The 2010 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 7, 2011.

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) includes the conferences and institutions that compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, in addition to two conferences who choose not to participate in the football championship, the Ivy League and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The FCS embodies a tradition of excellence through high level competition, student-athlete character and sportsmanship throughout the regular season and the championship experience.

Photographer in the frame over track soaking

I fully expect to do something like this in my future!  I have my moments and they tend to be pretty funny!

WHISTLER (Reuters) – A photographer caused a delay during a crucial moment of the women's luge competition on Tuesday when he accidentally knelt on a switch that sent water spurting on to the track.

Germany's bronze medallist Natalie Geisenberger was just about to push off for her fourth run down the Whistler course when a red warning light flashed at the starting gate — causing a two-minute delay.

“It was a hold put on the track as a result of a hydrant being accidentally activated, spraying water on the track. It was a obviously a matter of safety for the athlete,” race director Ed Moffat said.

Geisenberger, who did not make a fuss over the incident, missed silver by a fraction of a second.
